Preventive and Restorative Dentistry Q & A

What is preventive dentistry?

Preventive dentistry focuses on daily hygiene habits and routine in-office checkups -- all the things you can do to keep your teeth and gums healthy and free from decay and gum disease.

Common preventive dentistry efforts include:

  • Brushing and flossing at least twice a day
  • Selecting dental products with fluoride
  • Getting routine dental X-rays
  • Making and keeping regular dental checkups every six months
  • Taking care of urgent issues, such as inflamed gums and toothaches, before they become bigger problems

What is restorative dentistry?

Even if you’re a daily flosser and do everything you can to prevent dental issues, they sometimes happen anyway. Fortunately, Dr. Yu has the experience and knowledge to perform a variety of restorative services for your teeth.

Common restorative treatments include:

  • Dental crowns to strengthen and cover damaged teeth
  • Dental bridges to replace one or more missing teeth
  • Fillings to fill and restore the space that decay caused in a tooth
  • Dentures and implants to take the place of missing teeth and to restore the normal function of chewing and eating

How is a “deep” dental cleaning different from a routine cleaning?

When you come in for your six-month checkup with Dr. Yu, in addition to getting a full examination, you also have your teeth cleaned. A routine cleaning includes removing plaque and tartar along and below the gum line and polishing and flossing your teeth. The doctor or hygienist also measures the area between your teeth and gums. Larger pockets measurements greater than five, often signal a need for a deep cleaning.

The goals for deep cleaning are:

  • Scaling to remove plaque and tartar from the teeth and from the pocket area
  • Root planing to remove plaque and tartar from the roots of your teeth

You may need to book more than one visit for a deep cleaning as well as a follow-up appointment to make sure your gums and teeth have improved. Depending on your individual case, Dr. Yu may recommend three-month checkups or additional deep-cleaning appointments.

Dr. Yu is a strong believer in patient education and preventive dentistry. Book an appointment today and learn how you can have a beautiful, healthy smile for a lifetime.
