Crowns & Bridges Q & A

What are crowns and bridges?

Unlike dentures, crowns and bridges are fixed dental prosthetic devices that are adhered or cemented to existing implants or natural teeth. A crown, often called a “cap,” is placed over a weak or damaged tooth.

As its name suggests, a dental bridge joins together the gap created by missing teeth, and is supported by an implant or natural teeth. Although they have different purposes, both crowns and bridges have similar benefits including:

  • Improving a tooth’s appearance and shape
  • Keeping your bite aligned properly
  • Strengthening damaged teeth

In most cases, multiple visits with Dr. Yu are necessary to complete a crown or bridge treatment plan.

What issues can be treated by a dental crown?

A dental crown can restore a tooth by strengthening it or improving its shape and appearance. Dr. Yu may recommend a crown for these specific purposes:

  • To restore a broken or cracked tooth
  • To keep a weak or damaged tooth from breaking apart
  • To cover a tooth after root canal treatment
  • To support a dental bridge
  • To strengthen a tooth with a large filling
  • To cover a discolored or misshapen tooth

Why would I get a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a restorative treatment commonly used when you have one or more missing teeth. The bridge uses crowns on natural teeth or implants with crowns on either side of the gap and is supported by your natural teeth or implants. Artificial teeth, called pontics, are fashioned from porcelain or alloys to replace your missing teeth. There are a variety of benefits for dental bridges. They can:

  • Fix your bite, allowing you to chew properly
  • Prevent your remaining teeth from shifting
  • Allow you to speak properly
  • Restore your natural facial shape
  • Prevent loss of tissue in your jawbone

How long do crowns and bridge last?

Although crowns and bridges at times sometimes loosen and may fall out, with proper cleaning and maintenance they can last a lifetime. Good at-home oral hygiene practices, like brushing and flossing daily, as well as getting regular dental cleanings increase the life of crowns and bridges.
