General Dentistry Q & A

What is general dentistry?

A general dentist is the dental version of a primary care doctor.  As a general dentistry practice, Dr. Yu and her staff are responsible for your family’s overall dental health. She examines your teeth and gums, manages preventive education, treats any dental issues that develop, and coordinates care within her staff and with other dental specialists, if needed.

What treatments can a general dentist perform?

As a dental primary care provider, Dr. Yu has expertise in a wide variety of treatment services for you and your whole family. The most common general dentistry treatments include:

  • Comprehensive examinations of your teeth and gums, including routine X-rays
  • Teeth cleanings
  • Dentures and dental implants
  • Gum disease treatment for diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis
  • Oral surgery
  • Braces and orthodontics
  • Restorative care such as fillings, veneers, crowns, and bridges
  • Root canals
  • Teeth extractions

What is the difference between a DDS and DMD?

A doctor who graduates from an accredited dental school earns either a DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) or DMD (Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry). There is essentially no difference the two -- aside from one letter. Each university or dental school can determine which degree is awarded.

Both degrees have identical educational guidelines and must meet specific curriculum requirements. In order to earn a dental degree, a student must do three to four years of undergraduate study, four years of dental school, and postgraduate work if they wish to be a specialist. Like all medical doctors, dental graduates must pass a state licensure examination.

Can a general dentist pull a tooth?

Yes, general dentists are trained to do tooth extractions. Whenever possible, Dr. Yu takes every measure to save a tooth, but if necessary, she does a simple extraction. When a tooth is extracted, she recommends further treatment to fill the gap and restore your smile.
